Kidney stones are hardened mineral deposits that form in the kidneys. They begin as minute particles which bond together into crystal formations that eventually develop into stones. A kidney stone can be the size of a sand grain or it can reach golf ball proportions. One can have one or a number of kidney stones.
One may have a kidney stone for a month or a year before you begin to wonder what is going on. At some point, the stone grows large enough to signal that something is not quite right. The pain may start as a dull ache on your back, and side areas. As the body tries to expel the stone, the result is a constant, severe pain. Another sign can be a burning sensation when urinating, the appearance of blood in the urine, and an increase in the frequency and urgency to urinate. Other signals are nausea, vomiting, and contact pain at the lower abdominal area.

Kidney stones begin from a liquid and mineral imbalance in the urine. In order to function properly, the kidneys must balance the right fluid and material levels. When an imbalance occurs, the body is overwhelmed by excess materials that it cannot absorb or dissolve. As a result, the urine is left to deal with the extra substances that build up and eventually form the crystals that lead to the formation of kidney stones. Prevention:
To help prevent any type of stone, fluid intake should be two to three litres per day - water is best. People who get calcium stones should cut down on foods that have high levels of calcium (dairy products and leafy green vegetables), & oxalate (chocolate, tea, rhubarb, cooked spinach and asparagus). It's important to discuss dietary changes with a expert– not everyone finds them helpful. Person who get uric acid stones should eat less meat, fish and poultry. Also to help check uric acid stones, medicine may be prescribed to control the level of uric acid in the urine.
Drinking lots of water (two and a half to three litres per day) & staying physically active are often enough to move a stone out of the body. However, if there is infection, blockage, or a risk of kidney damage, a stone should always be removed.
